Diocesan Museum, Tarragona

The Diocesan Museum of Tarragona, accessed from the cathedral cloister, is composed of four rooms, the latest renovation of which took place in 2014. These 4 spaces offer a chronological journey, from Roman times to the 18th century. The origins of the collections date back to the mid-19th century, although the Museum was founded in 1914 by Bishop Antolín López Peláez, housing liturgical objects and artworks from the Cathedral Chapter, parishes within the diocese, religious congregations, and individuals. Over time, the collections have grown to encompass around 10,000 objects.

The Museum holds liturgical objects from the 6th and 7th centuries and sculptures from the 12th and 13th centuries, with a notable focus on its Gothic collections (14th-15th centuries), particularly in painting, sculpture, and goldsmithing. Works by prominent international artists such as Bernat Martorell, Jaume Ferrer II, and Lluís Borrassà can be found among these collections. In the Renaissance period, the Museum exhibits locally produced works, while in the Baroque era (17th-18th centuries), works by Luis and Francisco Bonifàs y Massó stand out.
