Clos Figueras Winery, Tarragona
Clos Figueras is situated in Gratallops, within the Denominación de Origen Calificada Priorat. The property was acquired in 1997 by Charlotte and Christopher Cannan. Clos Figueras possesses an original estate of old vineyards of Garnacha and Cariñena, along with other varieties such as Syrah, Cabernet, and Viognier.
It was a day in July 1997 when René Barbier showed Christopher and his wife Charlotte an abandoned vineyard north of Gratallops called “Les Figueres.” The beginning of a love affair with the land of Priorat started quickly, and René Barbier and his team took charge of the vineyard, which they named Clos Figueras, in honor of the two magnificent fig trees that were located in the vineyard.
Christopher decided to plant local Garnacha Negra, Syrah, Monastrell, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Viognier. Later, it was complemented with Garnacha Blanca and Chenin Blanc. In the year 2000, they acquired adjacent estates, incorporating old Garnacha and Cariñena vines that have since been a significant component of the prestigious Clos Figueres, the flagship wine of the estate.
The vineyard has been cultivated with ecological practices in mind, and they currently hold the official certification from the authorities (CCPAE). The vines are planted at various altitudes that extend to the Montsant river valley, in cool locations strategically chosen to delay the ripening of the grapes. The views over the wide Ebro valley and the mountains as a backdrop are stunning and provide protection from the cold northern winds.
