Miravet Castle, Tarragona

Miravet Castle, Tarragona

Built on a privileged vantage point, the medieval castle of Miravet is one of the finest examples of Templar architecture in Europe. It is a religious and military building with Arabic origins, following the defensive style of the castles in the Holy Land, featuring majestic walls rising above the Ebro River.

In the year 1153, it was conquered by the Christians, and Ramon Berenguer IV handed it over to Pere de Rovira, the master of the Templars in Hispania and Provence, who reconstructed it, transforming it into one of the main centers of Christian power on the Iberian Peninsula.

The uniformity of the construction indicates that the Templars erected the building relatively quickly. Traces of the ancient Andalusian fortress can be found in the lower sections of the walls and in part of the structures in the upper enclosure.

In addition to the castle, Miravet is a walled citadel with buildings at different levels. Its forms are solid and austere, resembling a medieval beehive, where the community had everything necessary to live within the walls.
