Sanctuary of Montferri, Tarragona

The Sanctuary of the Virgin of Montserrat is a chapel located about 380 meters away from the urban center, in the municipality of Montferri, in the province of Tarragona. The temple, in modernist style, was designed by the architect Josep Maria Jujol, resembling the mountains of Montserrat. The structure was built using one hundred and twenty catenary arches and has the shape of a boat oriented towards Montserrat. Its construction began in the year 1925 on the top of Corralet hill. The works were suspended due to the Spanish Civil War but were resumed in 1989.

At the beginning of the 20th century, there was a great devotion to the Virgin of Montserrat in Montferri, and it was a tradition for the villagers to pilgrimage to the Montserrat Monastery every year after the grape harvest. To avoid such a long journey, the Jesuit priest Daniel Vives Solé promoted the construction of a sanctuary dedicated to La Moreneta (the Black Madonna) in Montferri. He entrusted the project to his cousin, the architect Josep Maria Jujol, who was a close collaborator of Antoni Gaudí. At times, this sanctuary has been compared to the Sagrada Familia Basilica.

The foundation stone of the sanctuary was laid on November 15, 1925, and it was inaugurated on May 30, 1999.
